Fiesta collection coming to auction
By Eric C. Rodenberg

WOLCOTTVILLE, Ind. – “After 25 years selling Fiestware, this sale – without question – is the finest and rarest set of Fiesta I have ever sold,” said Michael Strawser of Strawser Auction Group.

The northern Indiana sale will feature the extensive collection of Fiesta amassed by longtime collectors Brian and Stephanie Fischer.

The Fischers, according to Strawser, had a discerning eye for quality Fiesta and established one of the finest collections in the country.

The sale will feature many rare, experimental, prototypes and one-of-a-kind pieces, according to Strawser.

Homer Laughlin began producing Fiesta dinnerware in 1936. It was produced through the 1960s, with many new colors offered before the entire line was phased out in 1973. The company re-introduced Fiesta in 1986 (hence, the Post 86 market designation) and it still operates today.

The first day of the sale – Friday, March 16 – will include a nice collection of Harlequin (which was introduced in 1938 as a less expensive alternative to Fiesta being sold by Woolworth’s stores), including an unusual water tumbler in medium green, a color which was never used in the commercial production of the tumbler.

Harlequin was produced until 1964 and was briefly re-introduced in 1979 for the 100th anniversary of Woolworth’s.

Also, being sold that day is a rare Post 86 persimmon prototype bulbous disk water pitcher signed by Fiesta designer Jonathan Parry. The pitcher is the only one known to exist, having been featured in several Fiesta reference books. It has a presale estimate of $1,500-$2,000.

Other scarce Post 86 pieces include a pair of sapphire round candlesticks and a lilac hostess tray set, neither of which were regular production pieces.

More than 500 lots of vintage Fiesta and will be sold March 17, including a selection of seldom-seen ivory red-stripe pieces including a 13-inch chop plate and demitasse coffee server with four cups and saucers.

The Fischer collection also features a complete flower vase collection which includes 12-inch, 10-inch and 9-inch vases in all six original colors.

Another astounding lot is a complete collection of covered onion soups, including the elusive turquoise. These covered onion soup bowls were discontinued in the fall of 1937. Turquoise was a new color in mid-1937, hence the turquoise covered onion soup was only produced for a short period of time in 1937, making for a unique, desirable find for the collector.
