Selkirk''''s Modernism auction features Andre Lhote work
ST. LOUIS — Andre Lhote (French 1885-1962) was sculpting by the age of 12. While he initially studied decorative sculpting in Bordeaux, he soon turned to painting and moved into the cubist style. After serving in World War I, he founded his own painting school and wrote numerous articles on art.

His works are coveted by those who love bright colors and all things modern.

A work by Lhote will highlight an April 20 auction conducted by Selkirk Auctioneers. Twice a year Selkirk hosts a Modernism auction for their clients who adore all things chrome, glass, colorful, and with warm, clean-lined wood construction. The auction will feature 300+ lots of Art Deco to Mid-20th century furniture, sculpture, lighting, artwork, pottery, glass and more.

Rhythmic Landscape / Stockholm No. 3, by Lhote (French, 1885-1962) measures just over 21 by 28 inches and is signed upper left. The original stretcher is stamped “Chevbery Guichardaz, 12 et 19 Rue Campagne-Premiere, Paris.” The work is archived and included in the artist’s catalogue raisonné having been classified in 1947 and titled Les Fermes Vues a Travers les Pins (Farms Seen Through the Pines). In 1950, the painting was part of the Stockholm Exhibition at Gallery Moderne, and the reference Stockholm No. 3 was listed with the title Paysage Rythme (Rhythmic Landscape). Subsequently sold to private collectors in the early 1960s the landscape has an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

Among the furniture, 10 lots by Wolfgang Hoffman (Austrian, 1900-1969) for Howell will attract bidders with an Art Deco circular, chrome plated steel and ebonized wood dining table as the standout. Other makers of furniture to be offered will include Eero Saaranin for Knoll, Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller, Frank Gehry for Knoll, Adrian Pearsall for Craft Associates, Sam Noguchi for Herman Miller, and Milo Baughman.

A bronze titled The Flair by Richard MacDonald (American, B. 1946) shows a gymnast performing the iconic move atop a ring. A 1974 brutalist, patinated brass starburst wall sculpture by Jon Paul will also be up for bids.
