Vintage Swank, a relatively new shop in Front Royal, Va., derived its name after owners Amy and Mitch Hazam kicked around various adjectives they felt would best describe their business.

"The name Vintage Swank seemed to fit with the image of us trying to be hip and aim towards a younger audience, but still cater to the quality expected of an older audience, too," said Mitch. "Swank is a term that was tossed around a lot during the 1950s to describe something as being fashionable. Vintage is a term that usually means items that are at least 25 years old.

"We feel it accurately describes the era and quality of items we represent in a memorable way. Our store has a youthful feeling atmosphere, and we tried to create a hip environment dealing with antiques that is different from most types of antique stores. Everything in our store is wearable or usable."

"These items are not meant to be sitting on a shelf," echoed Amy. "They''re meant to be functional. There''s this false preconceived notion that all vintage clothing is teeny tiny. I think people would be surprised to find the range of sizes we have available."

Amy, 29, and Mitch, 30, of Gainesville, Va., successfully launched the website www.vintageswank.com in October 2003 and opened the accompanying Vintage Swank showroom in October 2004.

The Hazams began their shop as a way to liquidate a personal collection and have kept expanding since. Today, Vintage Swank is one of the largest vintage clothing stores on the East Coast outside of New York, boasting an inventory containing more than 15,000 pieces from the 1920s-70s. In addition to clothing and accessories, the shop also specializes in telephones, Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, barware, furniture, jewelry, coin-operated machines, lighting and housewares.

The couple has divided the aspects of overseeing both components of their business based upon their individual fields of expertise. Graphic design major Mitch maintains and updates the website and its sales, while Amy, who studied photojournalism in college, mans the physical location''s sales.

"We had thousands and thousands of pieces selling from our home for a year," said Amy. "It eventually became a necessity for us to open an actual shop. We never thought of this as being a career, but it quickly became more fun and challenging than either of our chosen professions."

With at least a quarter of their sales taking place online, the Hazams have shipped items to four continents, 20 countries and 47 states. Items are broken down in general categories for convenient browsing and the website also provides information on properly taking care of antiques and restoration tips. The couple notes a lot of its customers are college students, as well as theater companies and reenactors looking for the perfect vintage piece to complete their look.

"We''re picky about what we bring in to resell," said Mitch. "Everything is ours. Everything has been personally cleaned, polished or restored, and we take a lot of care in what we do. It helps when the items listed online are in good resellable condition."

The Hazams'' shop, which features a one-level 3,000-square-foot showroom was recently recognized by Washington''s CBS affiliate, W*USA 9, in its first A-list competition as the "Best Vintage and Resale in the Washington D.C. area."

"We were ecstatic to see the great comments our customers wrote about their experiences with Vintage Swank," said Mitch. "The strong show of support they demonstrated helped confirm that you don''t have to be in a trendy neighborhood to offer the best quality and selection to your customers. We were pretty ecstatic because we''re not directly within the city limits. A lot of our repeat business has been through people traveling through, finding us and liking us – in other words, through word of mouth and customer referrals."

The 2006 W*USA 9 A-list contest provided a platform for consumers to vote and determine the best local businesses in Washington between July 18 and Sept. 8. More than 1,200 businesses within the Washington area entered the competition and nearly 60,000 votes were collected. All year long, the wusa9.com/alist will be the best local guide for consumers and Washington visitors.

"It is a testament to our great selection and the quality of our vintage pieces that our shop in Front Royal, Va., was chosen the best in the Washington D.C. area," said Amy. Approximately an hour west of Washington, Front Royal also has two specialty antique stores, an antique mall, an architectural/salvage store and two flea markets within driving distance.

Rock ''n'' roll music from the 1950s greets visitors to the shop, as well as carefully matriculated front window displays. According to Amy, the fact that the building was once an old clothing store known as the Boston Store, which opened in 1955, seemed appropriate when the couple was looking for the right location for their business.

"It''s a slice of the past when you walk through the front door,” said Amy. It''s very colorful, bright, happy and energetic. It''s not your grandma''s antique store."
