HATFIELD, Pa. —A buyer who had waited decades for Virginia to come to the auction block found his patience rewarded when the Oscar Hitt German character doll with googly eyes sold at the April 3 doll auction conducted by Alderfer Auction. Selling for $22,800 the winning bidder competed against online, phone and live bidders. This was the second highest selling doll in Alderfer auction history and marked the completion of a collection for the winning bidder. Named Virginia (“Ginny” for short) the doll featured stunning blue side glance eyes, a closed mouth and brown mohair wig. She was comprised of a bisque head, flange neck and pin joints. Ginny came dressed for the occasion with her five-piece cloth body adorned with antique cotton clothing. Other items from this sought-after collection from a well-known Lehigh Valley, Pa., dealer, were a pair of girl and boy Maggie Bessie dolls with a price tag of $13,200. The European dolls took front and center stage leading with a 17-inch female Van Rozen Doll France Depose selling for $7,800. Following the trend was the 17-inch 6EJ, Emile Jumeau, which sold for $5,100. A 14-inch 02033 BSW Wendy character doll sold for $5,400.
