Beads provided art for Native American textiles |

Beads of all types of long played a role in decorating Native American items. In times gone by, each of their beaded creations began with a hunt — acquiring buffalo, deer, mountain sheep, or elk hides. Soaking, cleaning, stretching, and softening (sometimes with boiled animal brains) transformed them into pieces of pliable leather. Many were sinew-sewn into clothing like leggings, dresses, and moccasins. |
